Dental Offices Add 45,000 Jobs In July, Report Shows

Return-to-practice roadmap for dentists in post-COVID-19 pandemic

FierceHealthcare (8/7, King) said a report released Friday by the Bureau of Labor shows dentist offices continued to recover in July. Specifically, “dentist employment added 45,000 jobs in July,” although that is “down compared to the 190,000 jobs” added in June. The health care industry overall added 126,000 jobs in July, significantly less than the 358,000 jobs added in July, the new data shows.

HealthLeaders Media (8/7, Commins) said the July job report shows “healthcare jobs continued their steady rebound in July as the nation contends with the coronavirus pandemic, but the pace of that job growth is slowing.”

Bloomberg Opinion (8/7) columnist Justin Fox said that “back in March and April, dental practices in the U.S. were among the businesses hardest hit by COVID-19 lockdowns, with employment falling 56.2%.” Friday’s employment report shows that as of mid-July, job losses at dental practices “since February had narrowed to 7.3%.” Fox also pointed to the ADA Health Policy Institute’s data on how COVID-19 is affecting dental practices and noted the ADA has recommendations for how to minimize the risk of virus transmission.
